B. Tyler Henry of the New Haven Arms Company introduced a lever-action repeating rifle the year the Civil War began. Only 1 700 Henry rifles were issued to Union troops but as the Henry ’s reputation grew Southerners dubbed it “that tarnation Yankee rifle that they load on Sunday and shoot all week.” After the war the Henry went West and there was more than one Henry rifle in the battle at Little Big Horn but unfortunately for Custer all of the Henrys were used by Indians. The early bronze-framed Henrys were followed by more rugged iron-framed models.
